King Theoden ascended the throne in 2980 TA, and took over the reign of a land in troubled times. His counselor Grima deluded him and kept him away from his duties, while blaming his absence on the declining health of his master. In reality, Grima, who was detested by most of the Rohirrim and called Wormtongue, was in league with the hostile Saruman and worked the wizard's will in Rohan through Theoden. Grima locked up the kings sword, Herugrim, in his chest to deprive the King his mighty symbol of power. Herrugrim features two opposing horse heads that serve as the crossguard. The symbol of the horse is a sacred symbol of Rohan.

Only Gandalf was able to raise Theoden's spirit again when he came to him at Meduseld, threw out the counselor, and had the king cast away his prop and take his sword Herugrim again instead. From then on, the old but tall, white haired man with the shining beard led his men into battle again, first in the victorious defense of the Hornburg, and then to Isengard.

"Robert Bohler - 03/08/2005 5 of 5 Stars!
This is one of the finest prop reproductions I have seen. The piece has the feel of an authentic battle ready sword, although anyone owning one would a fool to actually "try it out." I love how the form of the guard is reflected in the plaque, it adds to the sense of cultural authenticity that the designers wished to achieve.
